The Sienese Montagnola
At present, the Sienese Montagnola is still a little-known area of the Sienese, and therefore less touristy and with a strong natural vocation. There are many routes to be traveled, on foot or by bicycle, many hermitages to be discovered and hidden places to be known.
Hermitage of San Leonardo al Lago
Augustinian hermitage, surrounded by woods and for this reason once called “Hermitage of the Lake Forest.” The hermitage has origins as early as 1112; in 1366 the monastery was fortified to provide shelter for the people of St. Columba during the war. Some frescoes by Lippo Vanni and the remains of a fresco by Giovanni di Paolo can be appreciated here.
Hermitage of Lecceto
An Augustinian hermitage provided with a square tower, the church was remodeled in the Baroque period; notable are the two cloisters, in the older of which there is a well and 15th-century frescoes.
Parish of Pernina
Romanesque parish church in a beautiful panoramic location. The church dates back to the 12th century.
Monteriggioni
Typical example of a medieval fortified village, that is, a small town surrounded by a circle of walls. There were originally 15 towers; currently there are 11.
Pia Bridge
A place of Dantesque echo, as Pia dei Tolomei appears in Canto V of Dante’s Purgatory Comedy “Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma.” The construction of the bridge, “humpbacked,” joins the two banks of the Rosia Creek and dates back to the 13th century.
Dove
Here we find the large villa of Baldassarre Peruzzi, already recognizable from afar. Inside you can see a beautiful spiral staircase as well as a church of Romanesque origin with beautiful frescoes.
Island Abbey
Beautiful Cistercian abbey dating back to the 1,000th century.
