The Montagnola Senese, close to the Val d’Orcia and Chianti, is a part of the world waiting to be discovered: a green, wooded area with a strong natural vocation.
In addition to the famous and splendid city of Siena, the fortified village of Monteriggioni and its towers, there are many itineraries to explore on foot or by bicycle, numerous hermitages to discover, and places to visit
Discovering the surroundings
Among the places to discover, we suggest:
- The hermitage of San Leonardo al Lago, an Augustinian hermitage surrounded by woods and once known as “Eremo della Selva del Lago.” The hermitage dates back to 1112.
- The hermitage of Lecceto, also an Augustinian hermitage with a square tower. The church was renovated in the Baroque period, and there are remarkable cloisters, including an older one with a well and fifteenth-century frescoes.
- The Pieve of Pernina, a Romanesque parish church in a splendid panoramic position.
- The Ponte della Pia, a place with echoes of Dante, as Pia dei Tolomei appears in the fifth canto of Dante’s Purgatory in the Divine Comedy: “Siena made me, Maremma unmade me.” The construction of the bridge, known as the “donkey’s back,” connects the two banks of the Rosia stream and dates back to the thirteenth century.
- Abbadia a Isola, a beautiful Cistercian abbey dating back to the eleventh century.
